Open House Dinners
When we think of Open House Dinners what comes to mind is good conversation, fresh and affordable food and – for dinner regulars – the delicious yumminess [is that even a word?] of golden syrup dumplings. But if you look at it with a volunteering lens, you’ll see why this humble, weekly program has continued to go strong for so many years.
- It was started by a local person – our involvement was about “doing with” from the very beginning
- By “doing with” we’ve been able to help with meeting legal obligations, assist with attracting new volunteers and ensure sustainability
- It uses our town’s assets (the Town Hall) contributing to its occupancy
- We buy local adding to community
- We all eat together… and intend to do so for a long long time
This year Hepburn Shire Council has recognised the Open House Dinners program with a grant for equipment and learning. This is important because new equipment and learning ensures all the $ we put behind this program add value to the people we “do this program with”. At our last team meeting we had great fun researching equipment that would make preparing and cooking easier; as well as learning opportunities that might ‘feed’ resumes or people’s favourite foodie interests.

Clunes Trekkers started as a 4 person team who decided to trek for a good cause, Fred Hollows foundation (Coastrek), a 30 kilometre charity walk. We enjoyed it so much that we have now started this group, Clunes Trekkers, for like minded people who are keen to get out and explore the great outdoors within our beautiful landscape around the district. We have scheduled monthly walks, from a short 2-5 kilometre walk to the more challenging 20-30 kilometres. So hope you can join us and “Love where you live”
